On January 12th, a reporter from China Petroleum Network learned from Liaohe Oilfield that in 2025, the cumulative production of new wells in the three reservoir protection test blocks created by this oilfield was significantly higher than that of neighboring wells.
Liaohe Oilfield drills hundreds of new wells every year. During the drilling process, drilling fluids are used to cool the wells and carry sediment from the formation. However, these drilling fluids are highly likely to block many oil and gas channels in the formation reservoirs, especially for high-porosity and high-permeability reservoirs, causing significant risks to future reserves and production succession.
To this end, Liaohe Oilfield has launched a reservoir protection demonstration project. Following the principle of "from sparse to dense, from easy to difficult", three blocks including Ma7, Rong24, and Yu69, which are of high-permeability type among numerous low-yield oil reservoirs, were selected to create a "reservoir protection demonstration zone in the drilling field". Through in-depth research on the reservoir conditions of the blocks and various factors that are damaged during the drilling process, the composition and ratio of drilling materials were optimized.
The Ma7 block has been in continuous production for 52 years. Researchers have confirmed and demonstrated significant remaining oil potential. They have deployed 6 new wells and added modified polylactic acid fiber sealing agents to the drilling fluid. These agents quickly form a protective film between the drilling fluid and the oil and gas channels, preventing the drilling fluid from invading the oil and gas layer and causing damage. At the same time, these sealing agents automatically degrade and disappear within a few days, restoring the oil and gas flow channels. Starting from June 2025, the new wells in the Ma7 block have been successively put into production. The cumulative oil and gas production within the first 90 days is 54.94% higher than that of similar number of neighboring wells. The experiment has achieved good results.
