Straw "transforms waste into treasure" enters the fast lane of industrialization

From January 9th to 10th, the 2025 annual summary meeting of the "Key Technologies and Industrialization of Efficient Carbon Sequestration and High-Value Product Preparation from Straw and Efficient Carbon Sequestration and Carbon Enhancement Technology Products Enhancement and Application" projects of the "14th Five-Year Plan" National Key Research and Development Program, which was guided by the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and led by the Institute of Agricultural Environment and Sustainable Development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was held in Nanjing.


The conference system summarized the annual progress of the two projects and showcased a series of innovative achievements made by our country in the field of resource utilization and high-value utilization of straw. This indicates that the process of turning straw into valuable resources is moving from technological breakthroughs to the critical stage of industrial application.


Led by academicians Jiang Jianchun, Shen Qirong and Li Hongwen from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a consulting expert group composed of senior industry experts conducted diagnosis and planning guidance for this project. Researcher Yao Zonglu, researcher Feng Jing, and over 50 other key project team members attended this discussion meeting.

Focusing on circular carbon sequestration and high-value utilization, significant innovative achievements have been made.

The project closely aligns with the national "carbon neutrality" goal and the demand for agricultural green development. It focuses on the core research directions of "circular carbon sequestration" and "high-value utilization" of straw. In terms of on-site straw return to the soil, a direct return microbial agent that accelerates straw decomposition and increases soil organic carbon storage has been developed. This provides a new solution for soil conservation and improvement of soil fertility. In terms of off-site conversion, a series of high-value products such as straw fulvic acid fertilizer, carbon-rich water-soluble fertilizer, and carbon-based slow-release organic fertilizer have been successfully created. Process packages for tri-sulfur green separation, continuous enzymatic hydrolysis, and furan-based diol have been developed, and new processes such as pyrolysis methanol, liquid hydrocarbons, biochar adsorption, and energy storage materials have been researched and formed. This significantly enhances the resource value of straw. At the same time, the project has achieved systematic breakthroughs in equipment development, successfully developing a series of integrated equipment such as straw pyrolysis gasification, carbon gas co-production, and in-situ carbonization for return to the soil. This provides solid hardware support for achieving large-scale, efficient, and clean processing of straw.

The demonstration project has been successfully implemented, and the initial results of the industrialization exploration have been achieved.

To facilitate the transition of scientific research outcomes from the laboratory to the fields, the project focused on the main grain-producing areas such as Henan and Anhui as its main implementation sites. It promoted the construction of 14 sets of straw recycling carbon fixation and high-value utilization production lines and demonstration lines, initially forming a complete application chain from "technology - product - equipment - model". These demonstration projects not only verified the feasibility and economic viability of the technology, but also accumulated valuable engineering experience and operation models for the subsequent large-scale industrialization promotion, laying a solid foundation for moving from technological exploration to industrial practice.

Experts provide guidance and direction, facilitating the accelerated implementation of the results.

After listening to the project and topic presentations, the participating leaders and experts fully affirmed the phased progress made by the projects. They believed that these two projects were highly productive, highly innovative, and had strong demonstration value. They provided strong technical products and equipment support for solving the problems of straw resource utilization and promoting agricultural emission reduction and carbon sequestration. The experts put forward practical suggestions on how to further focus on national major needs, strengthen the depth of technological innovation, accelerate the process of成果转化 and industrialization, standardize the management of funds, and strengthen the collaborative linkage among projects. The meeting required that each project team must fully absorb the experts' opinions, closely adhere to the task goals, continuously accelerate the research and development and iteration of key technologies and intelligent equipment, and accelerate the implementation, transformation and demonstration promotion of mature technologies in suitable areas. At the same time, they must continuously strengthen the management of the entire project process and the supervision of fund usage, further condense significant and influential landmark achievements, and ensure the high-quality and high-standard completion of all research and development tasks, providing strong scientific and technological support for the green and low-carbon development of agriculture and rural revitalization in our country.
